Samsung Q1 Ultra Mobile PC Review
nForcersHQ.com

The Samsung Q1, the first UMPC released in the market, is attractively designed and well built. We soon grew fond of it and would highly recommend it to executives, journalists, road warriors and the likes desiring a small but immensely robust PC alternative with portable computing qualities not available in tablet and ultra-portable notebooks.

For its impressive multimedia and portable computing qualities, the Q1 gets our major approval as a handy travel companion on long-distance flights, daily commuting trips and the likes. And because it packs a CF card reader, the Q1 also presents itself as a valuable tool for photographers as well. The bundled Microsoft's Journal allows one convert the Q1 into a 'real notebook' to take down notes quickly by scribing directly on the screen by means of the stylus input.

First Look: Franklin Wireless EDVO Card
mobility Today

This revolutionary product will enable Tablet PC and Mac laptop and desktop USB EDVO Cardusers that do not have a PCMCIA card slot to connect to the Internet or company information with broadband-like download speeds using Sprint Mobile Broadband Services operating on the Sprint Power Vision Network. Not much information is out on this card but our early tests have shown remarkable speeds! Previous ultra mobile portables have had the "ball and chain" by tethering their EVDO phones/pda's but now those days are over and it looks like Sprint beat everyone to the punch!

Samsung Q1 BIOS upgrade available
jkontherun

Samsung_q1_8Eagle-eyed jkOTR reader Bill spotted a BIOS upgrade for the Samsung Q1 on the company's website; the 912 Kb file is dated July 28th and will bring your BIOS up to version "MA02". Bill and I have both run the upgrade without any major issues.

Samsung doesn't really provide much info on this BIOS upgrade so it's not yet clear what this fixes or adds. This short description is all we have to go on at this point: "You can update the BIOS & Micom in yourself". The upgrade is a simple five-minute process: download the executable, close all programs and run the upgrade directly in Windows; the upgrade will force a reboot. I HIGHLY recommend that you have your Q1 plugged in with the AC adapter when running the BIOS upgrade.

Imagine LAN Announces UltraSync™ Software for Ultra-Mobile PCs
PR Web

imagine LAN, Inc., a leading developer of mobility and recovery software applications, today announced the introduction of UltraSync, a peer-to-peer PC synchronization application for synchronizing files (music, pictures, documents, video, etc.), folders, Outlook® email, and browser favorites between an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) and a companion desktop or notebook PC via a wired or wireless LAN.

The Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) platform was designed as a PC companion for today's media-driven, on the go consumer/prosumer. It allows users to surf the Internet, check e-mail, and enjoy their favorite digital media content virtually anytime, anywhere. The UMPC combines the power of Windows® XP with mobile-ready technologies that make it easy to access and use full versions of Microsoft® Office, Internet Explorer, and other Windows-compatible applications on the go - enabling users to communicate, accomplish tasks, and stay entertained and informed wherever life takes them.

"Although the Ultra-Mobile PC brings many benefits to mobile users, its 'PC companion' design makes the need for comprehensive, yet easy-to-use synchronization between the UMPC and a home/office PC essential," states DP Tsay, president of imagine LAN. UltraSync satisfies the sync needs of the UMPC user by combining several categories of synchronization (files, email, browser favorites) into a single, easy-to-use application.

UltraSync Features
- File/Folder sync
- Outlook folder sync (messages, contacts, calendar, tasks, etc.)
- Browser favorites sync
- Sync Selection Wizard
- Deletion Tracking
- Overwritten/Deleted file recovery
- AutoSync (automatically start sync process when UMPC and partner PC are connected via wired/wireless LAN)
- Skin Selector (decorative skin selection for the UltraSync “dashboard” UI)

Why a $500.00 Price Tag for an Ultra Mobile PC isn't realistic - and why the Ultra Mobile PC’s are worth the asking price
TabletPc2.com exclusive

OEMs would like nothing better than to sell their Ultra Mobile PCs, for that "ideal" $500 price point.  However, as you can see from the chart above, the hard costs exceed $500 to build each unit, so it is impossible at this time.

Solid-state ultra-mobile PC goes on sale
Computeractive

A solid-state version of the Samsung Q1 ultra-mobile PC is to go on sale in the UK late this month – though it will be only available online.

It replaces the usual hard-disk with 32GB of flash memory and is the first mobile PC with no moving parts ever to be available in the mainstream market.

This makes it a double first for the Q1, which was also the first ultra-mobile built to Microsoft's Origami spec to be generally available. The model is being sold exclusively by Expansys .

The solid-state version will cost £1,399 - £600 more than the entry-level Q1. This is not expensive by the standards of ruggedised computers.

Samsung is also bringing out a Q1b model in October which uses Via's C7-M processor, and slightly improved disk space and Ram: 60-byte hard disk and 1GB of Ram. It will cost £899

More R2H images
carrypad.com

Asus have kindly sent me their marketing image pack for the R2H which I've uploaded to the gallery and product info page.

R2H images rh2

Two things to note from the close-ups.

1) No docking port.

2) VGA,TV-out and Ethernet port on board.

This, for me, puts it above the Samsung Q1 and in the same media-oriented bracket. Considering the gps, webcam, fingerprint scanner and tv-out, its going to sit above the Samsung Q1 in terms of specifications and in the same media-oriented bracket. If the price is better than the Q1, this is going to knock it for six.

Regarding launch date, we've heard two rumors of week 37 in Europe. That's the week starting 10th Sept.

Samsung Q1-SSD Ultra Mobile PC (Solid State Disk Version)  Available now!
expansys.com

Our Price: £1,399.95   ( $1790.35 USD)

The Samsung Q1-SSD is a high-performance version of the Q1 - featuring a Solid State Disk, it offers significantly faster boot times and faster program operation - it is also quieter, more durable and more efficient than it's counterpart with a spinning hard disk. This pack contains a FREE organiser case and full QWERTY keyboard.

It is designed for optimal portability and resolves many of the traditional challenges of mobile computers. The data in flash memory disks is much more secure against external shocks that can occur when transporting a mobile computer. The SSD can withstand about twice the impact that would cripple a regular hard disk drive. In addition, stored data can be more easily retrieved from flash memory than traditional hard drives when PCs are dropped or liquid is spilled on the device. This mobile computing device is the ideal solution for professionals and executives who are constantly on the move.

The SSD reads 300 percent faster (53MB/s) and writes 150 percent quicker (28MB/s) than normal hard drives. As a result, multiple application programs can operate simultaneously and large volumes of data can be edited and reproduced more efficiently. The Microsoft Windows XP operating system will boot up 25-50% faster on the SSD than on other drives—good news for those in a hurry. Moreover, the typical 1.8-inch hard disk drive weighs around 50 grams; whereas the SSD is 20 to 30 grams lighter.

The Q1-SSD will show video or still photos as well as play audio without having to be booted up first. This "instant on" feature provides access to multimedia content such as digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) TV at least 30% faster than with a portable multimedia player (PMP).

OneNote 2007, a UMPC and....fantasy football?
jkontherun
one note for football

Just another use of a UMPC along with Microsoft OneNote; seasoned OneNote'rs Fantasy Football on UMPCmight skip this, but I like sharing different uses of the application, especially with a UMPC since it can basically go anywhere. Previously, I used this approach on a Home Depot trip. Last night, I applied it to the Fantasy Football draft and found it extremely useful. You fantasy league players know the pains of carrying several draft cheat sheets and sorting though mounds of papers telling you that you should "Forget last season, this year [insert player name] will be the man for his team as well as the sleeper in the league."
